What is a Floatation Chamber?

A Float Lab floatation chamber provides a light- and sound-free environment containing 35cm of solution consisting of water and about 750kg of dissolved Epsom salt. The fluid temperature is maintained at external body temperature (around 35˚C). Inside the Chamber, you will float effortlessly without gravitational requirements and neither sound nor light input to consider.

What if I am claustrophobic?

The sensation of floating in the tank is more like floating in space than in a confined area. You are in total control of the float environment and can choose to float with the door open or closed. Claustrophobic people typically don’t have any problems during floating.

When should I arrive?

Its a good idea to leave yourself around 10 minutes before your float. Parking is located behind our building.

Do I need to bring anything?

No, Just yourself. You float without any clothing items on and we provide towels and products to use before and after the float. If you wear contacts be sure to bring your contact lenses case and solution.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

We suggest not shaving the day before or day of your float – it could sting. Also don’t drink any caffeine for a few hours before the float as it tends to make you a little jittery when you’re trying to settle into the float session. Something light in your stomach is also a good idea.

Do any doctors or physical therapists use floatation?

There is a ton of research all over the world concerning floatation therapy. Doctors and researchers have tested and proven that its beneficial for relieving stress/anxiety, treating fibromyalgia, PTSD, pain…and a litany of other ailments. So, yeah, there’s a lot of research out there.

I dye my hair, can I still float?

Our rule of thumb is that you wait no less than two weeks between colouring your hair and floating. If you’re unsure, your shower water should run clear at home before coming in for a float. The salt content of our water may bleach out the colour from your hair otherwise.

What if I fall asleep?

That’s completely safe, and it happens sometimes. Your buoyancy in the water supports you on your back, so flipping over is tremendously difficult to do. If you manage to twitch during the float, the worst that could happen is you get salt water in your eye.

Will my stuff be secure while I float?

Each room can be locked from the inside, so you’re ok to leave your stuff on the bench inside each float room.

Can I float if I'm menstruating?

Sure you can, just use the same protocol you’d use for a swimming pool.

Can I float if I'm pregnant?

Absolutely! Pregnant women have used floating to relieve the stress on their bodies for decades. If you’re in your third trimester or have any concerns, please consult with you doctor before booking a float.

Who invented these things?

John C. Lilly. He created the first floating tank in the 1950s, but later refined the model in the 1970′s, which is a similar unit to what is most commonly used today.

Why do you use these types of tanks?

Because they provide the purest floatation experience in addition to having the best filtration and disinfection system in the world!

Will I get pruney?

Not at all, the magnesium sulphate actually makes your skin very soft. You do absorb some of the Epsom salt, so it’s advisable to drink plenty of water after your float.

Is anyone unable to float?

People that are unable to use the tank include those with infectious diseases, patients undergoing active chemotherapy and those who are epileptic (not on controlling medication for the condition). If in doubt just give us a call.

Is there an age limit to float?

If you are under 18 years old, you will need your parent’s permission. If you are over 100, you will need your child’s permission.
